We place those values in the first two columns immediately, since they are the same for every two-variable truth table: 2) To figure out the content for the third column in the table, we need to use our knowledge of how conditional claims work. * To fill in the first blank in the third column, we look to the left. There, we see that p is True and q is also True. When p is True and q is also True, the conditional p → q is also True. So we know to write “T” in that first position of the third column. * We can now reason our way through the rest of the column. 3) * Now we use the same method to fill in the fourth and fifth columns. * In the truth table, the truth value of ~p is the contradictory of p, and the truth value of ~q is the contradictory of q. Therefore, whatever the truth value of a statement, the tilde (~) reverses it, from true to false or false to true.
