What is transformational leadership?
It refers to when the leader moves the follower beyond immediate self interest through idealized influence, inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation and individual consideration
What are the features of transformational leadership?
- Appeals to values and emotions
- Uplifts morale, motivation and morals of their followers
- Broadens and elevates the interests of their employees
- Generate awareness and acceptance of the purposes and mission of the group
- Stir employees to look beyond their self interest

What is transactional leadership?
It refers to the exchange relationship between leaders and followers to meet their own self interest
What are the features of transactional leadership?
Caters to the immediate self interest of the followers
Leader gets things done by promising and rewarding good performances and punishing, disciplining poor performance
Leads to mediocrity
Perpetuates and legitimized status quo
Give an introduction of transformational leadership?
Empower and encourage followers to do more than they are originally expected to do
Identified three processes for achieving high outcomes:
- Educating followers about the importance and value of designated goals
- Transcend their self interest for the good of the group
- Meet followers higher order of needs
What are the four I’s of Transformational leadership?
Individualized consideration: Mentor facilitates growth and development of followers.
Intellectual stimulation: Encourage followers to approach problems in new ways (creativity, risk taking and experimentation)
Inspirational motivation: Ability to passionately communicate a futuristic idealistic vision
Idealized influence: Charismatic leader, sets an example, principle driven and values oriented. Have very high standards of moral and ethical conduct

- Postive effects on organizational performance, culture and learning
- Positive effects on organizational commitment
- influences follower to shift focus to collective interest

- Followers report a high level of job satisfaction, empowerment, low levels of turnover and stress
- Associated with increased employee cognitive abilities, creativity and decision quality
