Ear Flashcards
Auricle/Pinna
Funnels sound waves/ vibrations to the ear drum
Tympanic membrane
Separates outer ear from inner ear; carries sound waves to the bones of inner ear
Malleus, incus and stapes
Middle ear ossicles that transmit vibrations from the eardrum/outer ear to the inner ear
Pharyngotympanic tube
Controls the air pressure within the middle ear
Osseous labyrinth
Houses the senses of balance and hearing
Perilymph
Cushion of fluid between the bony and membranous labyrinths; helps maintain hearing and balance
Membranous labyrinth
Houses receptors for hearing and balance
Endolymph
Within the membranous labyrinth; responsible for hearing and balance
Cochlea
Organ of hearing; receives and analyzes sound
Scala vestibule
Filled with perilymph; receives sound waves and causes a distortion in part of the basilar membrane
Scala tympani
Filled with perilymph; helps convert sound waves into liquid movement
Vestibular membrane
Transmits sound waves from fluid in the vestibular duct to the cochlear duct
Cochlear duct
Filled with endolymph; separates Scala vestibule and Scala tympani
Basilar membrane
Supports hair cells
Hair cells
Responsible for hearing, body position and motion
