summarize chapter 1
- Raskolnikov pretends to sleep, is approached by Svidrigailov because:
a. he wanted to meet him for a while
b. he wanted help to talk to dounia
- says he didn’t kill Marfa - he opens up about his monstrous nature but doesnt see it as anything to be ashamed of in a candid “some wealth and some taste” way
- says women like being dominated and “outraged, in spite of their pretended indignation…”
- Marfa’s ghost? says afterlife might just be a small room full of spiders - Svidri keeps saying “youre just like me fr” (am i a monster, or am i a victim? birds of a feather) and then rask is like wtf but also so curious he doesnt leave
- svidri is like “dude man i have 10,000 rubles with dounias name on them as an apology to marry Luzhin and no hard feelings” and is all like “shes sacrificing herself and she’ll be taking money from Luzh anyway, that marriage is CRUEL”
- also says Marfa Petrovna left 3,000 rubles in will for Dounia
svidri is like a foil for Rask here, the epitome of ubermensch and self reliance and dominating others, and Rask feels a strange connection w/him, especially because of marriage point
summarize chapter 2
- meeting w/ luzhin finally comes, boys head to Dounia + pulch. apartment
- on way rask is afraid of Svidri and asks Razumi to help protect dounia from him - Luzhin is enraGeD that Rask is there and even considers brother offer him
- dounia wants a fair debate, both sides - Luzhin talks about a rape and two deaths rumored to be by Svidrigail., ppl much lower socially = more vulnerable, says he is the most depraved person he ever met
- Dounia says that one of the servants was addicted to drugs, disputing the stories slightly
4.Luzhin is angered his wife “defends” svidri, rask reveals 3,00 ruble will stuff
- Rask refuses to talk abt meeting with svid earlier, Luzhin is offended
- Luzhin confronted with blatant lies abt Marmaladovs death and Sonya, becomes ruder, says he tried to marry Dounia in spite of horrible rumors (he knew they were false but brought it up anyways), rask laughs, pulch and Dounia are angry
- Dounia breaks engagement, sends him away

- Luzhin cant believe “such a magnificent prize” could escape him (used for his own career)

summarize chapter 4
- Rask visits sonia, she is slightly frightened/agitated, sonia is asked questions abt landlord, profession, and mom
- sonya is embarrassed and states “katerina has suffered so much shes broken, might not be able to parent”
and then Raskolnikov goes off taunting her with a terrible future, and one w/o god, and shes like “god will not allow it” and “wtf bro there is no world w/o god” - rask is all like “that is unrealistic dudeman”
- rask bows to sonia bcz shes so compassionate, wondering how such shame and baseness can exist with holy emotions
- sonia was friends with lizaveta, rask thinks sonia = religious maniac
- rask: “how tf do you not suicide, go insane, or be corrupted w/that profession while also being religious”
- Sonia says shes tht abt suicide but family needs her
- reads story of Lazarus to him, caught up in fervor
- “i rejected my family you are all i have left if you meet me tomorow ill tell yoi who killed liza” and also “we have both transgressed life, join me on the same road?”

summarize chapter 5
Sonya = redemption morall,y Porfiry = redemption intellectually
Rask —-> porfiry to file a claim to his 2 items, dread because hates porfiry and that hatred might give him away
Porfiry is like “i love toying with suspects and getting them to slip up”
porf. hints at suspicious rask. things and that he knows rask killed
jumping from strategies, imitating/provoking rask’s mental state
porf says he is a weak man, that rask notices everything, admits some of strategy to face, never lets Rask relax
Rask blows up, “stop torturing me, arrest me if you have proof”
