Q

The Columbia Valley and the Willamette valley both have AVA boundaries that surround the sites of the Missoula Floods. Explain why many vineyards in Washington are planted on those flood deposits, opposite to the Willamette Valley, where those sites are rarely chosen to plant vineyards.

A

The Missoula Floods Deposits are low-lying fertile soils. Woodburn series.
In Washington state, the Columbia Valley wine region benefits from a rain shadow because of the Cascade Range. It is a desert-like climate, arid, dry and hot. In order to grow vines and cope with water stress, a more fertile soil is necessary.

The Willamette valley, in its case, lies west of the Cascade range and is exposed to more rain and humidity than its northern neighbor, as well as cooler temperatures. Water stress is not a problem, so winemakers need to plant in poorer soils to lower vine vigor. The vineyards are then planted in higher elevation sites, higher than the flood deposits, to reach poorer soils (such as volcanic, loess and marine sediments) and avoid frost-prone valley floors.
