What was the Religious Settlement?
Elizabeth created the Religious Settlement to avoid religious conflict. She aimed to create a “middle way”, a form of Protestantism that Catholics would accept. She hoped Catholicism would eventually die out.
What was the Act of Supremacy?
It made Elizabeth supreme governor of the Church
What was the Act of Uniformity?
It meant all churches and services must be the same across the country.
What were the Royal Injunctions?
A set of instructions to enforce the Acts of Uniformity & Supremacy.
What was the Puritan Challenge?
The Puritans (extreme Protestants) disaproved of the use of crucifixes and priests wearing special vestments. Elizabeth was forced to remove crucifixes.
What was the Catholic challenge?
In 1586, the Pope instructed English Catholics not to attend Church services, and ultimately the Revolt of the Northern Earls was triggered.
