When was the Six Day War launched?

A

On 5th June 1967 when Israel launched a successful attack on Egypt and then targeted the airfields of Syria and Jordan where by June 7th reached the suez canal

What did Israel achieve in the six days?

A

They achieved spectacular victory. While only 779 Israelis were killed, 20’000 Arab men had been killed and 70’00 square metres of land was taken and since the Arabs had been aggressive before the war, Israel’s attack was labelled as a pre-emptive strike

What happened to Egypt and Nasser?

A

They were deeply humiliated by the defeat as Egyptian forces had been destroyed and Sinai and Gaza had been taken. The Suez canal which was an important source of revenue for the Egyptians and had been blocked by sunken ships in the fighting

A

Israel’s refusal to clear the ships out of the Canal, Egyptian forces regularly bombarded and raided Israeli positions on the Sinai side of the Suez Canal but Israel reacted fiercely raiding Egyptian towns and bombing their cities

A

USSR- Provided Egypt with fighter planes and anti-aircraft missiles to defend the Aswan Dam
USA- Supported Israel with weapons and aid, and also organised a ceasefire in August 1970 where both sides realised they couldn’t win and accepted it

What were the consequences of the Six day war for Israel?

A

They had captured East Jerusalem (which had the Wailing Wall, Temple Mount, West bank, Gaza strip, Sinai and the Golan Heights), so were 350% bigger and had obtained huge amounts of powerful soviet weapons plus the forces of their enemies had been destroyed

What happened to the land that Israel had won?

A

As a country couldn’t occupy territory gained by force and they couldn’t annex the territories into Israel as that would give 1 million Arabs Israeli citizenship, it was then decided East Jerusalem would stay in Jewish hands forever and the rest of land was put under military control

What was Resolution 242?

A

6 months after the 6 day war, the UN adopted it and it stated that Israel must withdraw from recently gained territories while Arabs must recognise Israel’s right to exist

What did Palestine plan to do after the six day war?

A

Take back their homeland by using Arafat’s group, Fatah, to launch guerrilla attacks to force Israel to leave its occupied territories or the PFLP’s attempt to draw global attention with terrorist actions outside of Israel

A

A Fatah mine blew up an Israeli school bus, killing the teachers and wounding 10 children, it was the 38th Fatah attack of the year

A

It sent 15’000 troops to Karameh to destroy Fatah bases, it succeeded but lost 28 soldiers, 27 tanks, two aircrafts and was condemned by the world for using excessive force

A

Much of Jordan viewed Arafat as their leader which challenged his position and the PLO used Jordan as a base for its operations against Israel which angered Hussein as they always retaliated and damaged Jordan

A

The Israeli Prime Minister, Golda Meir, organised air attacks on Syria and Lebanon and launched operation wrath of God which authorised Mossad to find and assassinate those responsible for the Munich massacre

A

Israel received negative publicity as innocent bystanders were killed in Mossad operations and international pressure was slowly increasing to find a solution

A

Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the year in judaism happened but Egypt launched a surprise attack on Sinai bombing Israel airfields and army bases in Sinai while the artillery bombee the Bar Lev Line

Why were Egypt so successful in their attack and what were their numbers?

A

23’000 Egyptian troops had powered into Sinai as they had been very well armed, in particular with Soviet built Sam-3 missiles that were crucial in shooting down Israeli jets and Soviet built sagger anti-tank missiles

What happened at the same time Egypt were attacking?

A

Syrian forces invaded the Golan Heights where Israel only had 170 tanks and 400 troops against the Syrian 1200 tanks and 60’000 troops

What did Syria win in the first couple of hours and how did Israel react?

A

Syria headed towards the edge of the Golan and threatened Israel’s heartland, it took 72 hours for Israel to mobilise before taking back control of the Golan Heights as they had superior tanks

What did Syria’s president do after the Israelis were back in control?

A

Assad appealed to Egypt to step up its attack in Sinai hoping to relieve some of the pressure on Syria. Sadat then ordered his troops to advance further moving out of protection of their Sam-3 missiles making them vulnerable to Israeli air strikes

A

Their was a massive tank battle: 260 Egyptian tanks and only 20 Israeli were destroyed. Egyptian forces had retreated to the canal and the Israelis US military supplies had arrived

Strengthened with US military supplies, they took control of a gap in between 2 Egyptian Armies in the Sinai

A

A massive mobile bridge was put in place and Israeli tanks and troops poured over the canal and seized control of the West Bank of the Canal. They also destroyed Sam-3 missiles for their aircraft’s to join the fight

A

They had surrounded an Egyptian army so Sadat had to agree to a ceasefire but Israel pushed on into Egypt looking to capture more land meaning the war needed international intervention to stop it.

How did international pressure on the US force Israel to stop fighting?

A

-The USSR told the USA that unless there was peace, they would send troops to help
-Other Arab states put an embargo against the USA on oil
-The US were then forced to put pressure on Israel to stop the war and they agreed to a ceasefire

What were the consequences in the Yom Kippur War for Israel?

A

It was an astonishing victory for them- they had gained land in both Syria and Egypt and the brilliance of there armed forces had been confirmed. However, 9500 soldiers were wounded or killed and most Israelis were critical of the government for not being ready for an attack

What were the consequences of the Yom Kippur war for the Arabs?

A

Egypt had suffered 30’000 casualties, it’s sam 3 missiles had been destroyed, and it had lost a huge number of thanks and aeroplanes. However, overrunning the Bar Lev Line was a brilliant military achievement and Arab pride in its military ability being restored while Sadat was now viewed as a deserving successor to Nasser by Arabs
