- Don’t attach to anything outside the tongue

- Originates from styloid process of temporal bone
- Lifts tongue upwards and backwards
What does the hyoglussus originate from and what does it do
- Originates from hyoid bone
- Pulls tongue downwards
What does the genioglossus originate from and what does it do
- Originates from superior genial tubercles of mandible
- Protrudes the tongue
What is the definition of the motor supply
All the muscles of the tongue are innervated by cranial nerve (the hypoglossal nerve)

- Special sensation (taste) - facial nerve (VII)
- General sensation - lingual nerve - branch of mandibular nerve
