Q

Whats the path of the oesophagus as it passes from the pharynx to the stomach

A
  • Passes through neck and thorax
  • Turns slightly to the left as it passes out the thorax through the diaphragm
  • Joins stomach
  • Passes from left to right in close association with the liver
  • Drains into the small intestine
17
Q

How can liver disease induce Oesophageal Varices

A

If the liver is scarred by alcoholic cirrhosis, its harder for blood to get through - causes portal hypertension so blood must go through oesophageal veins which dilates them - can cause a rupture
