Q

How did the people use/respond to Information Age?

First Function

A
  1. To Improve Everyday Life
Today, there’s scarcely an aspect of our life that isn’t being upended by the torrent of information available on the hundreds of millions of sites crowding the Internet, not to mention its ability to keep us in constant touch with each other via electronic mail. Probably the biggest payoff, however, is the billions of dollars the Internet is saving companies in producing goods and serving the needs of their customers.

Q

How did the people use/respond to Information Age?

Third Function

A
  1. Fostering the Spread of Freedom and Democracy
Internet can play a significant role in preparing people for the transition to democracy because of how the Internet delivers much more than information. The Net is open, it links people across borders, it showcases life beyond the edge of town—and that feeds a process that prepares people for an open and civil society. It has been evident that the people themselves must demand democracy. They have to seek it and grasp it—and if they don’t, democracy cannot take hold. Media coverage and information has been available to the internet and it has been used for viewing coverage of political campaigns and ensure fair election. The human spirit has to be readied, or the mechanics of democracy—the campaigns, the reporting, the voting, the honest declaration of winners and losers.

Q

How did the people use/respond to Information Age?

Fourth Function

A
  1. An Interactive Medium
The most obvious features of the Net parallel traditional media. Like print, the Internet provides public information. Like the telephone, it permits interpersonal exchange. Like books and manuals, it offers tutorials. And like movies and TV, it provides entertainment. The Internet is a remarkable Swiss Army knife of information and communication, and unlike the other media, it does the job simultaneously in text, images, audio and video. But the Net has unique features unknown to traditional media—feedback and interactivity. These are the keys to the personalization of communication. The real promise of the Net for democracy building is how people use it. Unlike the traditional one-way flow of information where audiences remain passive receptacles, the Internet gives users an active role as it enables them to fulfill personal requests. It provides a sense of control, and its user-driven choices reinforce this medium as a metaphor for self-determination.

Fifth Function

A
  1. Learning from Afar
The base delivery system for the distance-education mega-universities is television, supplemented by other technologies or even some onsite instruction in more-developed countries. Some distance-education systems use two-way interactive video connections to particular locations where students gather; others. Supplemented with the Internet, and still, others deliver only by Internet. With video- and audio streaming now available, the Internet appears to be the technology of choice for systems where students have access to computers. Of course, these technologies merely add to the radio-delivered courses that have been offered for years in many countries around the world.

25
Q

How Social Media Works?

A

Social media is word of mouth on steroids, and people are sharing more than words. They also share ideas, pictures, video, and audio: Content. Then other users share that content in turn, through personal connections at an unprecedented rate. Social media works similarly to how word of mouth worked before the Internet.

26
Q

What are the advantages of Social Media

A
  • Staying in Touch - It’s easy to use social media to keep in touch with friends and family who you might have otherwise fallen out of contact.
  • Finding Jobs - If you use a professional social network, such as LinkedIn or Xing, you will be able to see automatic job listings that are a perfect fit for the skills you’ve listed on your profile.
  • Social Media Is Fun - Games, chat, interesting articles, memes, videos— there’s plenty of content to keep you entertained for hours, regardless of your interests.
27
Q

What are the disadvantages of social media

A
  • Cyberbullying and Online Abuse - One of the worst drawbacks of social media is the prevalence of cyber bullying and online abuse. It’s worryingly common for people to be targeted based on their gender, appearance, sexual orientation, religion, disabilities, political beliefs, and a whole lot more. Kids are especially vulnerable.
  • Addiction Is a Growing Problem - Too many people are more worried about their number of followers on Instagram than their real-life problems. It’s not healthy, either physically or mentally. Indeed, it’s one of the most significant negative effects of social media on society.
  • Privacy Is Non-Existent - Another of the major cons of social media is the lack of privacy. If someone is a heavy social media user, you can often find out everything about them—favorite books, employer, what their baby looks like—with no more than a few minutes of cursory research.
