Q

List the properties of ferrous metals

A
  • The carbon content make it prone to corrosion when exposed to moisture and oxygen - rust
  • Hard
  • Malleability related to carbon content: more carbon the harder and less maleable, less carbon the more maleable the material becomes

6
Q

List the properties of a non ferrous metal

A
  • The fact that it does not contain iron means it is more desirable due to malleable properties
  • Resistant to corrosion
  • Good thermal and electrical conductivity
  • Low density
  • Non-magnetic

10
Q

Why are alloys used?

A

Alloys adjust their mechanical and physical properties in order to produce a more suitable material for a particular purpose. They can be both ferrous and non ferrous depending on the metal included.
