Q

why does apoptosis occur

A

proper development and to destroy cells that pose a threat to the organism (i.e infected cells/ DNA damaged cells, cancer cells

Q

what happens during apoptosis

A

chromosomal DNA is usually fragmented, chromatin condenses and nucleus breaks up into small pieces, cell shrinks+ breaks up, and then the fragments are phagocytosed

Q

how may apoptosis be triggered

A

ligation of cell surface receptors, DNA damage, treatments with cytotoxic drug or irradiation. lack of survival signals, contradictory cell cycle signals, developmental death signals
