Magnesium Sulfate Mechanism of Action

A
  • Depresses the CNS, blocks peripheral neuromuscular transmission, and produces anticonvulsant
  • Can cause bronchodilation after beta agonist anticholinergics have been administered

Management of TdP, Severe bronchoconstriction with impending respiratory failure, Seizure during the third trimester of pregnancy or in postpartum patient

A

Known hypersensitivity, heart block, myocardial damage, diabetic coma, hypermagnesemia, hypercalcemia

A

OBGYN: 4 g IV drip over 10 min
Respiratory: 2 g IV drip over 10 min
Cardiac: 1 - 2 g IV slow push
