For Christians: As Jesus being the fufilment of the suffering servant prophesised about by his method of crucifixion, ‘But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our inequities’. The writers in Matthew are making a theological point to the Jewish readership about who they believed to be the person of Jesus.
