First line Abx for tonsilitis?

A

Phenoxymethylpenicillin.

The Centor criteria are: score 1 point for each (maximum score of 4)
- presence of tonsillar exudate
- tender anterior cervical lymphadenopathy or lymphadenitis
- Fever
- absence of cough

Viral labyrinthitis vs vestibular neuritis?

A

Viral labyrinthitis is characterised by sudden onset horizontal nystagmus, hearing disturbances, nausea, vomiting and vertigo.

Vestibular neuritis has very similar presentations to viral labyrinthitis but does not cause hearing loss.

  • In unilateral sensorineural deafness, sound is localised to the unaffected side.
  • In unilateral conductive deafness, sound is localised to the affected side.
