Reaction Mechanism 1 Flashcards
What happens in a general organic reaction?
Substrate is attacked by Reagent leads to the formation of intermediate which forms products and by-products.
Substrate?
Reactant which supplies carbon to the new bond and the other reactant.
What happens to the bonds between the molecules in a organic reaction?
Bond cleavage and Bond formation
What is Rxn. Mechanism?
Details of:
•Electron movement
•Energetics during
1.) Bond formation
2.) Bond cleavage
3.) Rate is TRANSFORMATION of reactant into product. Chemical Kinetics
Why studying Rxn. Mechanism is important?
•Reactivity of organic compound?
•Synthesis of organic compounds?
What is bond cleavage?
Fission of a covalent bond
What is Homolytic Fission?
Movement is single electron after breaking of a bond resulting in formation of neutral species (atom or group of atoms), containing an unpaired electron.
What species do Homolytic Fission give rise to?
Free radical, homopolar or non-polar
How to identify that a Homopolar Rxn has taken place?
Heat and Light may be involved
Half headed fish hook curved arrow is shown in the molecule undergoing Homolytic Fission.
Stability order of Free radicals?
3°>2°>1°
Explain everything about heterolytic cleavage?
Bond breaks in such fashion than shared pair of electrons remains to one of the fragments.
After heterolysis:
•One atom has sextet of electrons with positive charge.
•One atom has octet with a lone pair and negative charge.
Explain Heterolytic fission product Carbocation?
Carbonium or Carbocation is ion with positive charge making it unstable and highly reactive. Only Inductive and hyper conjugation(alkyl group attach to carbon stabilize it)can stabilize it.
