What is a strength of MSM?

A
  • P: Strength = support from other studies showing STM and LTM are different
  • E: Baddeley (1966): We mix up words that sound similar in STM - mix up words that have similar meaning in LTM
  • E: Further support comes from the studies of capacity and duration
  • L: Studies show that STM and LTM are separate and independent memory stores as claimed by MSM

What are Limitations for msm?

A
  • P: Limitation = MSM is evidence of more than one STM store
  • E: Shallice and Warrington (1970): KF had amnesia
  • E: KF’s STM for digits were poor when read out loud but recall was better when he read the digits to himself. Futher studies showed there could be another STM store for non-verbal sounds
  • L: MSM is wrong in claiming that there is 1 STM store is processing different typess of information
  • P: Limitation = prolonged rehearsal is not needed for transfer to LTM
  • E: MSM: states it matters how long you rehearse something which is prolonged (maintenence) rehearsal. Craik and Watkins (1973): Type of rehearsal is more important than the amount
  • E: Elaborative rehearsal is needed for long-term storage - Occurs when you link the information with existing knowledge or you think about what it means. Info can be transferred to LTM without prolonged rehearsal
  • L: MSM doesn’t fully explain how long term storage is achieved
