Q

Why should we build identity based habits instead of changing outcome habits?

A

Building identity based habits means that we are focusing on who we want to become.

If we only focus on the outcome, we might change the process to reach that outcome, but the process change does not have the same staying power that changing our identity does.

EX: I don’t smoke vs. I am not a smoker.

Q

Why is it dangerous to accept an existing identity?

A

Ex: I’m bad at remembering things.

If you tell yourself this, you will find ways to remain changed to this identity. This means not taking the steps that you need to in order to incite changes.

To truly change, you need to focus on visualizing a new identity for yourself.

Q

How do I change my identity in two simple steps?

A
  1. Decide the type of person that you want to be.
  2. Prove it to yourself with small wins.

Ex: I want to be someone who can speak and learn a new language fluently.

I prove that to myself with reoccurring small wins. This might be studying for an hour every day, or learning new vocabulary everyday.
