Q

explain how clicks are produced

A

the back of the tongue creates a closure with the velum and a secondary closure is made further forward. the tongue moves down, increasing the space and therefore decreasing the air pressure in the mouth - this causes air to move inwards as it has a higher pressure, to balance the airflow. in doing so, it creates a clicking sound where the closure further forward is momentarily parted and returned.

Q

explain how ejectives are produced

A

the muscles of the throat (larynx) move the layrnx up which makes a smaller space and increases the air pressure in the mouth so it is now higher than the air pressure outside. this build up of pressure leads to articulators to separate, causing a dramatic burst of air.

Q

explain how voiced implosives are produced

A

the muscles of the throat (larynx) move the layrnx down which makes a bigger space and decreases the air pressure in the mouth so it is now lower than the air pressure outside. this leads to air being drawn in the mouth, past the articulators and vocal folds putting them in motion, creating a voiced sound
