Q

How were you received?

A

Upon the point of a sharp instrument, piercing my naked left breast, which was to teach me that as that instrument is a torture to my flesh, so may the recollection be to my mind and conscience, should I ever presume to reveal any of the secrets of freemasonry unlawfully

I was conducted to the center of the lodge and caused to kneel for the benefit of prayer. No man should ever enter upon any great or important undertaking without first involving the blessing of God

Q

What was then done with you?

A

I was conducted once around the lodge that the worshipful master and brethren might see that I was duly and truly prepared, and caused to stop at the south, west, and east stations, where the same questions were asked and like answers returned as at the door

I was reconducted to the senior warden in the west, who taught me to advance by one regular step, my feet forming a right angle, my body erect, facing the east

Q

What was then said to you?

A

That before we could proceed with the ceremonies of this degree, it would be necessary for me to take an obligation, by which I would bind myself to keep inviolate all the mysteries of freemasonry appertaining to the degree of entered apprentice Mason,

and was assured that this obligation would not interfere with the duty I owe to God, my country, my neighbor or myself; it appertained to freemasonry alone. With this assurance on the part of the master, I was asked if I was willing to proceed.
