Volunteering at the Care Home

A
  • gave me the basic understanding of how a care setting works
  • compassion the carers had towards the residents is inspiring and really heart warming
  • also made me realise that helping someone, watching the residents become more comfortable in their new home and become more accepting towards their care, increasing the quality of life for the residents and making a noticible difference in their well being was a really fuffilling feeling and something i would cherish in a career as a doctor
  • improved my interpersonal skills, working with carers and nurses and communication with the elderly
  • empathy and respect for the elderly - forgetful and embarrased residents, reassurance, not wanting to have their medicine
  • dignity - often times in the carehome patients becqme unable to go to the bathroom independently or dress themselves alone so its really important to respect these new emotions as these changes happen and the little things like simply knocking before entering the room makes a huge impact.

Tutor Representitive for my form

A
  • responsibilities of informing my peers about opportunities and events around college, encouraging feedback about the college, extra-curriculars, subjects, teaching, exams and college facilities
  • approachable - my pees felt comfortable in coming to me and explaining questions and concerns baout school, and trusting me woth any worries they had
  • had to raise these problems with my fellow tutor reps and communicate with the senior leadership of the college and then work out ways to improve conditions and resolve the issues together, cooperation as a team

Volunteering at Brownies

A
  • built my confidence
  • again developed my communication skills with adults and children of a variety of ages and abilities, adjusting my language and tone
  • gave me experience with teaching and being a team leader to young children, talking them through activities
  • had to have patience and adaptability, adjusting games for a child with selective mutism, shows flexability which is vital for a career in medicine

c-section/ward round

A

Learning opportunity more than anything else:
- highlighted the importance of team-work within a care setting, watching the multi disciplinarary team working together emphasised the vitality of each professional from nurses monitoring patients vitals and calming her in a stressful and tense operation, to the foundation doctor assisting in the surgery, midwife talking to the father and reassuring him, anesthetist making sure the epidural was working and patient was in no discomfort, working in a team is something i have learned i love from my duke of edinburgh expedition and performing as part of a large cast in school productions
- ward round showcased the busier and unplanned side of working in a hospital, fast paced, thinking quick on your feet with creative solutions, noticing patterns and thinking logically (latin)

Duke of Edinburgh Expedition

  • working as a team with people i hadn’t met before to read maps
  • due to covid pandemic only two had experience with maps including me, so occasionally there would be differing viewpoints on which direction to take, i tried to create an environment where everyone felt comfortable coming forward with ideas, i didnt want to make my teammates feel like their imterpretation of the map was silly or make them feel bas for their misinturpretation, but i also was very accepting to listen to their ideas and wanted them to feel comfortable in calling me out if they disagreed. a team only works if evryone is on the same page and feels valued so it was important to make sure we all felt comfortable with eachother.
  • tried to be motivating and enthusiastic on the very long walk, but also wanted to empathise with my team mastes that were fed up and tired because it wasnt the best situation.

Medial Schools Council Summer School

A
  • one of the experiences that consolidated my want to do medicine and become a doctor
  • teamwork and problem solving skills shown in a task where we were to run a mock consulation with a patient actor, had to work together in coming up with a diagnosis and compile a treatment plan. this is where i learned that the diagnostic aspect of medicine a doctor faces in their everyday life is like a mystery and i got a thrill from researching about different diseases and figuring out what we could do to improve the patients condition.
  • building a feild hospital with no instructions, began chaotic but we all began cooperating eventually, communication improved as time went on
