Q

brief summary of the failure of the anti-lynching bills in the new deal era

A

1934 - NAACP supported senators Costigan + Wagner in their introduction of the anti-lynching bill, however southern democrats organised a filibuster and the bill died.
After nation wide coverage of the death and torture of a black man, Claude Neal, a second Costigan-Wagner Bill was introduced. Again, southern democrats organised a filibuster, this one lasting seven weeks.

Q

why did Roosevelt lack in his support for civil rights legislation

A
  • although he was the first president since 1870s to denounce lynching as murder, he never fully supported the anti-lynching bills of 1934,1935 and 1937
  • this is because he didn’t want to alienate southern white democrat voters
