A

Age-related sensorineural hearing loss - affects high pitched sounds first. Hearing loss occurs gradually and symmetrically.

What is the presentation of presbycusis?

A
  • Loss of high-pitched sounds which can make speech difficult to hear and understand, particularly in loud environments
  • Associated tinnitus in some cases
  • Can lead to increased risk of dementia

A

Audiometry - sensorineural, worse hearing loss at higher frequencies

  • Otoscopy is normal
  • Rinne’s test - conductive hearing loss
  • Weber’s test - normal if otosclerosis is bilateral
