chromatography Flashcards

1
Q

chromatography

A

used too separate and identify the substances in a mixture
there are multiple types of chromatography but they all have 2 phases:
mobile phase- where the molecules can move. always a liquid or gas
stationary phase where the molecules cant move. can be a solid or thick liquid

Q

the phases

A

the components in the mixtures separate out as the mobile moves to the stationary phase. they end up in different places in the stationary phase
happens because each of the chemicals in the mixture will spend different times dissolved in the mobile phase and stuck in the stationary phase
how fast a chemical moves through the stationary phase depends on how fast it “distributes” itself between each phase

Q

thin layer chromatography

A

the stationary phase is a thin layer of solid layer of a sloid on a glass or plastic plate. the mobile phase is a solvent.

Q

paper chromatography

A

similar to tlc but the stationary phase is a sheet of chromatography paper
the mobile phase is still a solvent
