Q

What medication do we give patients experiencing acute mountain sickness (AMS)

A

Acetazolamide — a carbonic inhibitor. It causes bicarbonate diuresis, which rids the body of excess fluid and induces metabolic acidosis. The acidotic state increases the rep rate and decreases the occurence of periodic resp during sleep at night In this way, it helps clients acclimate faster to a high altitude. By increasind resp rate, the cliwnt can perfuse more oxygen.
