Neutralisation Of Acids And Salt Production Flashcards

1
Q

What is the PH scale ? What are the two sides of it and the colour for them

A

A measure of how acidic or alkaline a solution is
Low numbers (red) being more acid
High numbers (purple) being more alkaline

Q

Write a balanced equation for the reaction between hydrochloric acid and sodium oxide.

A

2HCL + Na2O —- 2NaCl + H2O
Negative Cl ions react with positive sodium ions to form sodium chloride (salt) and water

Q

What are the steps for making an insoluble salt ?

A
  1. Place some dilute acid in a beaker
  2. Gently gently with a Bunsen burner
3.keep adding insoluble base (at first it will disappear) but when it no longer disappears stop (the base is in excess and the acid is neutralized)
  3. Next filter out all the solution (filter paper+ funnel)
  4. Should be left with the dissolved form of the salt
  5. Now gently heat up our solution using a water bath or electric heater
  6. Once crystals form leave it to cool and then filter them out
