Research Issues Flashcards
Extraneous variables
any variables other than the IV that may affect the DV if its not controlled
Confounding Variables (CV)
a variable other than the IV that varies systematically with the DV so we can’t tell if the DV is changed by IV/CV
Demand Characteristics
cues from the researcher that may be interpreted by participants as revealing the aim of the experiment/what behaviour is expected.
Investigator effects
Any effect of the investigators behaviour on the research outcome and/or dependent variable
Randomisation
the use of chance methods to control for the effects of bias when designing materials and deciding order of experimental conditions
Standardisation
Using exactly the same formalised procedures and instructions for all participants in a research study.
