2: Group 2 Flashcards

1
Q

How does atomic radius change down the group and why?

A

Increases
This is because the number of electron shells increases

3
Q

Why does ionisation energy decrease down the group?
Which effect is overridden?

A

Atoms get an extra electron shell down the group. This increases the shielding effect. Outer electrons are further from the nucleus so attraction is reduced.
The effect of higher nuclear charge is overridden by shielding.

4
Q

How does reactivity change down the group and why?

A

Reactivity increases as the outer electron is released more easily, due to less attraction to the nucleus. This means ionisation energy is low.

Q

Why does melting point generally decrease down the group?

A

The size of the atom increases, but the number of delocalised electrons does not increase. Electrons get further from the nucleus down the group so electrostatic attraction is reduced.

16
Q

Give an equation for the extraction of titanium.

A

TiCl4 + 2Mg -> Ti + 2MgCl

17
Q

Describe how CaO/CaSO4 can be used to extract SO2 from flue gases.

A

The Ca compounds are mixed with water to create a slurry which is sprayed onto the gases.
SO2 reacts with the slurry to produce calcium sulfate.

17
Q

Give the equation for for CaO, H2O and SO2.

A

CaO + H2O + SO2 -> CaSO3 + H2O

18
Q

Give the equation for for CaCO3, H2O and SO2.

A

CaCO3 + 2H2O + SO2 -> CaSO3 + 2H2O + CO2

19
Q

Give the formula of the hydroxide of the element in Group 2, from Mg to Ba, that is
least soluble in water.

A

Mg(OH)2
