6
Q

What makes a metal need less energy to remove the electrons and form positive ions

A

If they are to the far left of the periodic table they don’t have many electrons to remove
If at the bottom of the periodic table the metals outer shell is further away from the nucleus so has a weaker attraction

7
Q

Why is it more difficult for non metals to form positive ions

A

This is because they are to the right of the table so babe lots of electrons to remove to get a full outer shell or towards the top where the outer electrons are close to the nucleus so feel strong attraction

Q

Physical properties of metals

A

Strong but can bent or hammered into shapes (malleable)
Great for conducting heat and electricity
Have high boiling and melting points

Q

Physical properties of non metals

A

Don’t have metallic bonding so tend to be
Dull looking
More brittle
Aren’t always solids at room temperature
Don’t generally conduct electricity
Often have a lower density

Q

Special properties of transition metals

A

Can I have more than one ion
Often coloured so compounds that contain them are colourful
Often make good catalysts
