What are pilot studies?
Small scale versions of an investigation
What are pilot studies used for?
to check procedures, identify problems and make any necessary changes so the research is as valid as possible
What are pilot studies used for in questionnaires?
check wording of questions isn’t ambiguous
What are pilot studies used for in experiments?
check the materials aren’t offensive/upsetting
What are pilot studies used for in observations?
check coding system is relevant/appropriate
What are single blind procedures?
a type of research design where a participant is not aware of research aims and/or which condition of the experiment they are receiving
What are double blind blind procedures?
neither the participant nor researcher conducting the study are aware of the research aims or other important details of a study
What is an experimental group?
the group in an independent groups design containing the independent variable as distinct from the control
What is a control group?
in an experiment with an independent groups, a group of participants who receive no treatment
