What Is Fixation?
When a child gets stuck at any one of the psychosexual stages of development. This will have a long-lasting effect on personality.
What Are The Two Types Of Fixations?
- Frustration
- Overindulgence
Define Frustration
When the stage has not been resolved because needs have not been met.
Define Overindulgence
This is when the needs of the child have been more than satisfied, and the result is that the child feels too comfortable and reluctant to move onto the next stage.
Outcomes Of Fixation At The Oral Stage
- Frustration - Pessimism, envy, sarcasm
- Overindulgence - Optimism, gullibility, neediness
Outcomes Of Fixation At The Anal Stage
- Frustration - Stubborn, possessive, overly tidy
- Overindulgence - Messy, disorganised, reckless
Outcomes Of Fixation At The Phallic Stage
Self-assured, vain, may have problems with sexuality and building and maintaining relationships in adulthood.
Outcomes Of Fixation At The Latency Stage
No fixations as there is no pleasure focus.
Results At The Genital Stage
Adult will be ‘normal’ if the earlier stages of psychosexual development have been successfully completed.
