Q

Visible light, radio waves, X-rays, gamma rays and microwave are some of the components of the electromagnetic spectrum.
(a) State two other components of the electromagnetic spectrum.
(b) White light is a mixture of different
Fig 5.1 shows a ray of white light entering a glass prism (15) Pg 1 (theory A)
The white light separates into a number of colors. Only the blue light and the red light are shown.
Explain why the blue light and the red light separate as shown

Q

A star emits electromagnetic radiation over a range of wavelengths.
Fig 4.1 shows the brightness of the radiation from the star at different wavelengths (15) Pg 3 (theory a)
Radiation from the star is brightest at one wavelength.
(a) Determine the wavelength where the radiation is brightest
(b) Visible light has a wavelength between 4.0 x 10^-7m and 7.0 x 10^-7m
The radiation in (a) lies just outside the visible part of the electromagnetic spectrum
State the name of the region of the spectrum that contains the radiation in (a)
(c) Determine the frequency of the radiation in (a)
The speed of light is 3.0 x 10^8 m/s

Q

The components of the electromagnetic spectrum have different uses.
Microwaves are used in cooking and ultraviolet rays are used in sterilization
(a) Draw 1 line from each component of the spectrum to another suitable use for that component.
components:
-microwaves sunbeds
-ultraviolet television controller
satellite television
airport security check of cases
(b) Fig 5.1 shows a microwave oven used to heat up soup. The container for the soup is a glass bowl. (15) Pg 4 (theory A)
Microwaves created inside the oven are reflected by metal walls
i) Explain why the choice of material for the container is important in microwave cooking
ii) The soup is mostly water.
Microwaves are completely absorbed by a few centimeters of water.
As a result, microwaves do not reach the center of the soup.
The instruction suggest that, after the microwaves oven is turned off, the soup:
-is not stirred
-is left for some minutes so that the center becomes hot
State the name of and describe each of the two processes by which thermal energy transfers throughout the soup after the microwave oven is turned off.
name off the first process:

name of the second process:
