Q

How is lamination via encapsulation carried out?

A

Q

How is the embossing process carried out?

A

The embossing process uses two dies, male and female, made from stainless steel or brass
The dies can be cold or heated
The substrate sheet is held under pressure

15
Q

How is foil blocking carried out?

A

16
Q

Why does foil blocking require high accuracy?

A

If the heat and pressure is too low the foil will not adhere
If the heat and pressure are too high the foil will bubble and peel

17
Q

What is varnish?

A

Varnish is a clear non pigmented ink used on pre coated papers and boards to enhance the colour, as well as offer some protection against dirt

18
Q

What is UV varnishing?

A

It provided a very smooth finish
Specific machinery is required that will instantly cure the UV varnish
The varnish is applied via a set of rollers

19
Q

What is spot varnishing?

A

Spot varnish is varnish that is applied in specific areas or spots rather than the whole surface area
A plate or set of plates pressed onto the surface and applied varnish to that spot

20
Q

What is screen printing?

A

Screen printing is a simple and effective process used for small print runs of items such as textile T shirts

21
Q

What are the advantages of screen printing?

A

Minimal set up costs
Basic

22
Q

What are the disadvantages of screen printing?

A

Time consuming
Carried out one colour at a time
Ink has to dry or cure between colours

23
Q

How is screen printing carried out?

A

The substrate to be printed on sits in the machine bed, on top of this substrate is a mesh screen which has open areas for the ink to pass through, a different screen is required for each colour, colour is squeegeed through the open areas of the screen onto the substrate

24
Q

What is flexographic printing?

A

It used a four colour process, these colours are printed on top of eachother in various quantities to create the print colour required

25
What are the 4 colours used flexographic printing?
Cyan Magenta Yellow Key (CMYK)
26
What are the benefits of flexographic printing?
Fast Cheap Fast drying water based inks Simple operation Low cost equipment Low maintenance
27
What are the disadvantages of flexographic printing?
Colours must line up precisely with one another or the image will appear blurred Cost of printing plates is quite high Large amounts of substrates used to set up
28
What is flexographic printing used for?
Newspapers 🗞️📰 Labels Carrier bags 🛍️
29
How is flexographic printing carried out?
Water based ink is fed from the first ink roller to the anilox roller The anilox roller makes the ink uniform in thickness and transfers the ink to the plate cylinder The impression cylinder applies pressure to the plate cylinder to transfer the image
