Switch Features Chapter 11 Flashcards
What is the difference between in band and out of band management?
in band: Managing a switch from the same network that moves data weather you connect locally or remotely.
Out of Band: Managing a device outside the network, usually through a special network just for monitoring. A computer connecting to the console port of a switch is an example.
Define Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN)
Common feature among managed switches that enables a single switch to support multiple layer 2 broadcast domains and provide isolation between hosts on different VLANS. Critical for modern network performance and security.
Define Trunking
Process of transferring VLAN Data between two or more switches
Define Trunk Port
Port on the switch configured to carry all data regardless of VLAN number between all switches in a LAN
Define Load balancing
Process of taking several servers and making them looking like a single server, spreading processing and supporting bandwidth needs.
Define Content Swtich
Advanced networking device that works at least at layer 7 (application ) and hides servers behind a single IP address
Define Traffic/Bandwidth Shaping
Controlling the flow of packets into or out of the network according to type of packet or other rules.
Define Port Bonding
Logical joining of multiple redundant ports and links between two network devices such as a switch and a storage array.
Define Port Mirroring
Capability of many advanced switches to mirror data from any or all physical ports on a switch to a single physical port. Useful for any type of situation where an admin needs to inspect packets coming too or from certain computers.
Define Proxy Server
Device that fetches internet resources for a client with out exposing that client directly to the internet. most servers accept requests for HTTP FTP IMAP and SMTP resources. Server often caches or stores a copy of the requested resource for later use.
