A

Removal of brain tissue in order to alleviate disease symptoms.

Main purpose - disrupt abnormal signaling to the thalamus.

Can improve - tremor, Bradykinesia, rigidity, gait disturbances

Deep brain stimulation

A

Is effective in improving impairment in specific populations of ppl with PD.

Done to counter motor fluctuations + dyskinesias

Pallidotomy - PVL of GPi is to treat rigidity, tremor, Bradykinesia + dyskinesias

Impact of DBS

A

Increases on periods and decreases symptoms. It has positive effects on sleep and pain.
DBS is ineffective in managing gait and balance impairments that are not responsive to medications.
There could be changes in speech and swallowing with DBS
