Q

Consequence of DNA mutation

A

May alter the 1 structure of the polypeptide, changing the secondary structure of the hydrogen bonds, affecting the alpha helices and beta pleated sheets
May alter the tertiary structure, changing the position of the hydrogen and ionic bonds and disulphide bridges
Making the protein non functional by altering the binding site

Q

How can stem cells be used in medical research?

A
  • Producing new tissue for skin grafts
  • Research into producing new organs for transplant
  • Research into how cells become specialised
  • Research into cancer and other diseases
  • The use of stem cells to cure diseases such as parkinsons

12
Q

Ethical concerns about stem cells

A
  • Some people think its not right to use stem cells as embryos have human status
  • Some people believe embryos have no moral rights whatsoever
  • Animals must be used in experiments with stem cells before they can be used on humans
  • The patient donor has to consent for their cells to be used

Q

Transcription factors definition

A

Proteins which when activated bind to the target promotor region of a gene stimulating RNA polymerase to begin transcription of the target gene

15
Q

Describe the activation of transcription via oestrogen

A
  • Oestrogen diffuses through the phospholipid cell membrane
  • Diffuses through the nuclear envelope
  • Binds to the oestrogen receptor in the nucleoplasm
  • Changes the tertiary structure which releases the transcription factor
  • Transcription factor binds to the DNA at the promotor region
  • This stimulates RNA polymerase to transcribe the gene
  • This increases transcription so mature mRNA is produced

16
Q

What are the two types of RNA

A

miRNA
siRNA

17
Q

How do inheritable changes inhibit transcription

A
  • Increased methylation of DNA
  • Decreases acetylation of histone proteins
18
Q

What is acetylation?

A

Results in histone proteins being loosely packed so the DNA is less condensed

19
Q

What is methylation?

A

DNA becomes tightly coiled

20
Q

What are the two types of tumours

A

MAlignant
Benign

21
Q

Malignant definition

A

Fast growing
Non-capsulated
Do metastasise

22
Q

Benign definition

A

Slow growing
Surrounded by a capsule
Dont metastasise

23
Q

Proto-onco genes

A

Stimulates cell division

24
Q

Tumour suppressor genes

A

Slows cell division
