DNA Flashcards
What is DNA?
Deoxyribonucleic acid. The molecule in cells that stores genetic information.
Where is DNA found?
In the nucleus of animal and plant cells in structures called chromosomes
How many chromosomes does a cell have?
46 (23 pairs)
What does the 23rd pair of chromosomes determine
If you’re a boy or girl. Girls have XX chromasomes and boys have XY chromasomes
What is a gene?
A short section of DNA which contains the instructions needed to make a protein.
How many amino acids are used?
20 but they can make thousands of different proteins
What is a genome?
All of the genetic material in an organism.
Why is understanding the human genome important?
To identify genes in the genome that are linked to different types of diseases
It helps doctors find effective treatments for inherited diseases
It allows you to trace the migration of your ancestors
What are chromosomes?
Thin strands of DNA.
