Aphasia Types Flashcards
Master the differences between the aphasias
**expressive aphasia
-comprehension intact, impairment is fluency and repetition
-struggle to form words, perseveration, lack of content/meaning
**comprehension is intact, often allows for awareness of errors
Broca’s Aphasia (non-fluent)
-comprehension and repetition are impaired
Similar to brocas, less severe
**key difference between TM and Broca’s aphasia is significantly intact repetition in tm
Transcortical Motor (non-fluent)
-comprehension and expressive are impaired, repetition impaired
-only can repeat some
**like global, except for more intact repetition
Mixed Transcortical (non-fluent)
-severe, both expression and comprehension are significantly impaired
-fluency, comprehension, repetition all bad.
-loss of speaking sometimes
-cannot follow directions
**significant deficit
Global Aphasia (non-fluent)
***receptive aphasia
-comprehension, repetition impaired
-physical act is fine, content and relativity is missing
- common occurs with agnosia (visual deficit)
Wernicke’s Aphasia
-comprehension is fine, output is impaired
***difficulty pronouncing words, especially when repeating
Conduction Aphasia
-comprehension impaired, repetition intact
***mimics Wernicke’s, less severe, repetition intact
-very common with progressive diseases
Transcortical Sensory Aphasia
-fluency, comp, repetition intact
**Disproportionate difficulty with word finding and naming
**Circumlocution
