A

religious grievances of the new Book of common prayer, catholics wanted to reverse the religious reforms. traditional rituals have gone, but there was also resentment of sheep tax implemented by insensitive local officials.

A

was the worst year of the whole Tudor period, two major rebellions and considerable disorder throughout the country.
somerset’s government difficult to cope troops garrisoned against Scotland and in the south-east toward off the French.
most risings died fairly quickly through action of local nobility and gentry.

A

underlying social, economic and political issues were significant contributors to unrest. Somerset lacked royal authority that a monarch had.
unpopular policies could be easily challenged and that was the situation.

mean that there would be an exclusion of political groups and the gentry feared they would lose their power and influence
rise of xenophobia
many wanted Mary to marry Edward Courtenay

Economic - unemployment and vagrancy, merchants wary of Spanish competition

late 1553 nobles and gentleman planned for risings to take place in summer 1554
rising would be in Leicestershire under Duke of Suffolk and in Kent under Thomas Wyatt
gathered 30,000 men in Kent
Mary made a speech and many rallied behind her, the rebellion collapsed

A

Mary was lenient with the rebels as she was getting married soon and didn’t want another rebellion. Paget took over 480 convicted, 90 executed.

A

very strong threat - intended to kill Mary, 4 uprisings which would then march to London and prevent the wedding, Queen sent the army and many of them deserted and joined the rebels.
not a threat - government knew about it and the immediate action of the rebels was disapponting, took their time was not constantly a threat

what was the Somerset coup in 1549?

A

Somerset wanted to be kept in power with his desire to keep power and be in control over a minor.
therefore kidnapped Edward to Hampton court and held him hostage in October 1549
he was then arrested
executed in January 1552

what was the succession crisis?

A

Mary thought that once Edward died she would inherit the crown because of the succession acts.
however Edward changed this and in his devise he named the successor as Lady Jane Grey and her heirs
this was because he wanted a protestant to take over the throne
not a Roman catholic as Edward knew that Mary would change religion to her favour - catholic
