cognitive behavioural therapy Flashcards
basis assumption of CBTp
- schiz have distorted beliefs than can negatively influence behaviour
- helps patient identify & correct faulty interpretations
-one to one & 16 sessions recommended - establish link between thoughts/feelings with their symptoms
-can then explain why they feel that way & will reduce stress
nature of CBTp
- encouraged to trace origins of their symptoms
-set behavioural assignments to improve functioning - patient looks for all explanations & coping mechanism for the beliefs
how does it work?
ASSESSMENT - express thoughts to therapist
ENGAGEMENT - therapist emphasise with patient feelings
ABC - negative beliefs can be rationalised
NORMALISATION - therapist says it’s normal to have unusual experiences like delusions to feel less alienated
CRITICAL COLLABORATIVE ANALYSIS - gentle questioning to help them understand illogical beliefs
DEVELOP ALTERNATE EXPLANATIONS - patient develops own alternative explanation
evaluation 1
ADVANTAGE OF CBT - when compared with anti-p, CBTp effective in reducing relapse up to 18m after treatment also reduced symptom severity & improved social functioning
STRENGTH: clearly more effective
BENEFITS MAY BE OVERSTATED - recent methodologically correct meta-analyses have found CBTp as a sole treatment is less effective than originally thought. only has a small therapeutic effect on symptoms like hallucinations/delusions as they’re quick to disappear
LIMIT: effects clearly not for long term
evaluation 2
NO SIDE EFFECTS: cbtp doesn’t suffer from creating side effects like addiction like other treatments do
STRENGTH: less likely to develop side effects
HAVE TO BE WILLING: to do cbtp individual ahs to be willing to make the changes otherwise won’t be effective.
LIMIT: clearly not effective for all schiz
