Precursors to Football and Baseball

A

Both sports are based in English folk games and flourished in New England

Football was a neighborhood level game, with Irregular rules and before the formation of soccer, rugby, and football as distinct sports.

Played only a few times a year, e.g. Christmas, but Puritans banned it

Baseball originally called town ball and based on an old game bittle-battle, played with four bases and similar rules

In some cases you had an individual score rather than a team score, eventually called the Massachusetts Game

Version of original football still played in England, the Atherstone Ball Game still

french-indian / 7 years war

A

Called French-Indian War in America, but took place on 5 continents

War breaks out in 1754, initially very successful for French who had allied with the Hurons

Warfare in Europe, British, Prussians, Germans vs. French, Austrians, Russians, Swedes

Naval warfare allows the British to defeat French in Asia and ultimately in Europe

british won but lost so much mone they needed to tax the colonies.

WASHINGTON’S RISE

A

At 21, led a mission into the Ohio Valley calling on French to desist in incursions, gained renown by publishing his journal about it

Washington sparks Seven Years War in 1754 in North America with an attack on the French but is forced to surrender to larger French force soon threafter

Takes part in failed expeditions against French at Fort Duquesne

At Battle of Monongahela (1755), he helps save many lives by regrouping and strategically retreating, fought for 4 hours
