Hobbes and Locke

A

Had some parts in social contracts but had different viewpoints on it:
Hobbes: said that man are at nature yearning for war and men need strong government, needed to give up certain rights to survive and protect life.
Locke: said that government was brought to preserve property and justice and that if the government couldn’t do that then the people had the right to revolt since the social contract was broken

Direct only really works in small communities where everyone can easily have a say
Indirect is what we the U.S. have adopted since we voted for someone to represent us.

Wickard v. Filburn (1942)

A

Agriculture Act was passed to stabilize wheat prices, farmers were only allowed to grow a certain amount,
a farmer grew a little extra for his family.
US court said intrastate activity can have an
aggregate effect on interstate commerce…therefore giving the U.S. Congress
the authority to regulate the activity under the Commerce Clause

The 16th and 17th Amendments

A

16th Amendment that gave the U.S. Congress the power to levy
and collect taxes.
 The 17th Amendment also increased federal powers by removing the right to
appoint U.S. senators from state legislators and putting it in the hands of the
voters.
