15
Q

Why do you think gold is found as a pure metal in nature while aluminum is found in ores?

A

Gold is not reactive, so it does not easily form chemical compounds with other elements, while aluminum is highly reactive and readily forms compounds.

16
Q

What does high reactive aluminum mean?

A

This means that it bonds very easily with other elements to form compound

17
Q

Basic facts of aluminum?

A

Aluminum is a ductile and malleable metal that
is a good conductor of heat and electricity. It is
the third most common element, and the most
common metal, on Earth, making up about 8%
of Earth’s crust.

18
Q

Aluminum can be found in what minerals?

A

Aluminum can be found in a great number of
minerals, including bauxite, corundum,
alunite, topaz, and mica.

19
Q

Steps to make aluminum/the bayer process

A

The aluminum in bauxite ore cannot be
produced directly. The first step in aluminum
production is to extract alumina from the ore.
Alumina, or aluminum oxide, is a chemical
compound of aluminum and oxygen.
The alumina in bauxite is produced through the
Bayer process. This process extracts alumina
from the remaining components of the bauxite
ore. It takes 2 pounds of bauxite ore to produce
1 pound of alumina.

20
Q

What is alumina?

A

Alumina or aluminum oxide is a chemical compound of aluminum and oxygen

21
Q

Why is strip mining generally used for bauxite?

A

Bauxite is found at or near Earth’s surface, so it is most easily accessed using strip mining.

22
Q

What is a ductile metal?

A

A metal that is ductile can be stretched into thin
wires without breaking.

23
Q

What is a malleable metal?

A

A metal that is malleable can be hammered or pressed into thin sheets

24
Q

What is a ductile metal?

A

A metal that is ductile can be stretched into thin wires without breaking

25
Q

Tin’s avalabilty compared to other minerals.

A

Tin is the 49th most abundant mineral in
the Earth’s crust.

26
Q

How much tin does the earths crust contain?

A

The crust contains about 0.0002% tin

27
Q

What does corrosion mean?

A

the destruction of a material by a chemical action

28
Q

What is a malleable metal?

A

A metal that is malleable can be hammered or pressed into thin sheets.

29
Q

Coppers avabilaty compared to other metals, is its scarce or abundant?

A

Ideally,
metals should be mined in locations where the
concentration is greater than 2%. However, in 2015, the
global average of copper concentration in mined ores
was 0.62%, far below the 2% ideal. Thus copper is scarce

30
Q

What is tin’s avalability compared to other metals; is it scarce or abundant?

A

Tin is the 49th most abundant mineral in
the Earth’s crust. The crust contains
about 0.0002% tin.
