‘Understand’ - his parents poor selfish parenting has left him feeling neglected and partially caused the situation.

‘Blame’ - he acknowledges what he has done is wrong and accepts RESPONSIBILITY for his actions. Could be Priestley showing the audience that the younger generation are good people who want a change (from capitalism).

‘Our’ - he knew so much about them that it doesn’t matter if he was a real policeman or not - Eric now sees that they all played a part in a girls death and they all need to take RESPONSIBILITY. Shows that the younger generation are beginning to see the positives of socialism.

‘Nicely’ - he can see that Mr and Mrs Birling do not care and have not learned anything. He sees how wrong and hypocritical this is. As they represent CAPITALISM, he can now sees the problem with it.

‘Rotten story’ - it doesn’t matter if the police inspector was real - they all acted horribly and someone has died as a result and Eric is able to see the error of their ways.

‘Interest’ - he won’t be able to just carry on like the older characters and this has deeply affected him - Eric truly feels guilt and remorse for what he has done.
