Coursework/Applied Experience needed for licensure
Substance abuse (15 hours) [at an academic institution]
Human sexuality (ten hours)
Child abuse (seven hours)
Spousal or partner abuse (15 hours)
Aging and long-term care (six hours) [coursework or applied experience]
Suicide assessment and intervention (six hours) [coursework or applied
experience, effective January 1, 2020]
Supervised professional experience can be obtained in 5 different ways
Formal internship (predoctoral SPE only)
Employee in an exempt setting
Registered psychological associate
Department of Mental Health (DMH) waiver
Formal postdoctoral training program (postdoctoral SPE only)
Psychological License Renewal and expiration
Licensed renewed every 2 years
Can be renewed within 3 years of expiring. Once 3 years have passed one has to reapply for licensure.
Someone who is not practicing can put there licenses on inactive status indefinitely
Psychologists with out of state licenses practicing in CA
Can provide services in California for up to 30 days each calendar year
Can provide services in California for up to 180 calendar days from submitting application for a California license to BOP, or beginning residency, whichever comes first
Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirements
36 hours each renewal cycle accrued from at least 2 categories
(except if ABPP board certification)
Professional activities
Academic activities
Sponsored continuing education
ABPP board certification
4 hours of CPD in the area of law and ethics
4 hours of CPD in cultural diversity/social justice
CPD in law and ethics and cultural diversity/social justice can be
met through CE, peer consultation, supervision, or self-directed
learning
6 hours supervision coursework can count towards CPD but is only required if you are a supervisor.
Non-disciplinary actions for minor violations
Remains confidential except citation and fine.

Disciplinary actions – more serious violations
Referred for formal investigation and if there is support for allegations, the BOP submits the case to the Attorney General.
Letter of reprimand [for minor violations; no patient harm]
Two-step agreement [for minor violations]
Probation – license revoked, revocation stayed; terms and conditions of probation specified [e.g., when licensee has been negligent]
Suspension – during suspension, licensee cannot practice [when licensee has been convicted of a felony]; requires that licensee immediately suspend his or her practice [when licensee is a threat to the public]
Surrender of license – licensee opts to surrender license before the administrative hearing is completed
Revocation – license is lost [e.g., when licensee has been found guilty of sexual misconduct]
Recourse – to petition for reinstatement or modification of probation. And revocation/suspension. Time frame of accusations.
At least three years for reinstatement of a license revoked, suspended, or surrendered
At least two years for early termination of probation of three years or more
At least one year for early termination of probation of less than three years
Time frame:Accusations must be filed within three years from the date the BOP discovers the alleged act, or within seven years (10 years in instances of psychotherapist sexual exploitation) from the date the alleged act
occurred, whichever occurs first
