why are alloys more stronger and harder than pure metals

A
  • pure metals have a regular structure of positive ions arranged in a giant lattice
  • these layers can easily slide over each other - making metal soft and easily shaped
  • alloys have different-sized metal ions which distort the regular layers and make it difficult for them to slide over each other - so stronger
