Q

Mx of cognitive impairment
(Remedial approaches)
(Ideational apraxia)
(Ideomotor apraxia)

A

Utilizes structured or repeated practice of specific cognitive task and mental exercise (e.g. games, audio book, reading through laptop at home for attention and executive function)

Ideational apraxia:
difficulty with multiple-step task / inappropriate use of object

Tx: sequencing: Ask the client which clothing item should be selected next (socks or shoes?)

Ideomotor apraxia:
unable to imitate/copy a movement / cannot perform a verbal command

  • internal mental rehearse
  • visually imagine the steps before performing
  • speak out loud to him/herself while executing the steps

Q

Mx of cognitive impairment
(Compensatory approach)

A

External strategies:
memory aids/ written instruction/ checklist/ day planner
- new technologies:
e.g.use smart phone

spread demanding tasks throughout the day → allow rest periods (scheduling); greater cognitive ability: in the morning, after rest

Setting up a quiet work space and free from visually distracting stimuli

break down task into smaller steps

minimize multitasking

allow increased time to complete tasks
