The Fight Or Flight Response - Adrenaline Flashcards

1
Q

Summarise the process of fight or flight response (Intro)

A
  • ANS and endocrine system play a major role in the stress response producing the fight or flight response
  • when stressor is identified by brain, it activates the sympathetic branch of ANS

Q

Describe the process of the fight or flight response

A
  • STRESSOR identified by HYPOTHALAMUS and activates PITUITARY GLAND
  • triggers activity in SYMPATHETIC branch of ANS
  • adrenal medulla releases ADRENALINE into bloodstream
  • produces fight or flight response, producing physiological reactions
  • such as immediate and auto responses like inc hr + bp or reduce digestion + saliva production
  • the PARASYMPATHETIC branch returns body back to normal after stressor is removed

Q

What is meant by adrenaline? (Intro)

A
  • adrenaline is the hormone released from adrenaline medulla
  • it travels thru bloodstream and activates heart and circulatory system
  • inc hr and bp, important changes as part of fight or flight response

Q

Describe the role of adrenaline in the fight or flight response

A
  • there are two effects of the role of adrenaline in preparing the body for the fight or flight response
  • the direct effect of adrenaline inc hr which inc bp therefore inc bloodflow to brain and skeletal muscles
  • the indirect effect preps body for action such as fight or flight response which would inc blood supply to skeletal muscles for physical action, this stops digestion and production of saliva. also inc oxygen to brain for rapid response planning

Q

What happens when the stressor is removed - parasympathetic branch?

A
  • once stressor is removed, parasympathetic branch of ANS takes over
  • functions to activate rest and digest reponse, returning body back to homeostasis after fight or flight response
