Reversible reactions Flashcards
What is a reversible reaction?
A reaction where the reactants form products, and the products react to form the original reactants.
What is equilibrium?
When the forward reaction is going at the same rate as the backwards reaction.
Where is equilibrium only reached?
In a closed system.
What is a closed system?
A system where none of the reactants or products are lost and nothing can get in.
What does the position of equilibrium depend on?
Temperature
Pressure
Concentration of reactants and products
What does it mean if the equilibrium lies to the right?
The concentration of products is greater than that of the reactants.
What does it mean if the equilibrium lies to the left?
The concentration of reactants is greater than that of the products.
In reversible reactions, what happens if the reaction is endothermic in one direction?
It will be exothermic in the other direction.
