In the story Kathleen asked her father if he had ever killed someone in the ward. The fact that the author struggles to answer this question and even my soonest daughter shows that this issue still weighs heavily on him. So the frame adds weights and depth to the central story about the battle and the killing of the young Vietnamese soldier
