What are the 2 main principal sources between male + female pelvis’?
A
- The female pelvis’ has to transmit a baby during childbirth leading to a widening in the pelvic inlet + outlet.
- Males are usually heavier + have larger muscles. Any structure that is weight-bearing will be larger in males.

What are 5 differences between male and female pevlis’?
A
- The female pubic angle is wider + more U-shaped. Males are acutely angled + straighter.
- Female pubic body + Superior pubic ramus are wider. Males have a larger acetabulum instead.
- Greater sciatic notch is wider in females.
- Female pelvic inlet is round. Males are more heart-shaped. Due to male sacral promontory juts further forward.
- Males have a larger auricular surface on the sacrum than females.

What is the Obstetrical Dilemma?
A
- A hypothesis outlining how opposing evolutionary pressures resulted in a narrower pelvis to better help walking
- But for women a wider pelvis to allow birth
- Making them less able to walk or run compared to men.
